Scanning of B&W negatives with Silverfast and Epson 2450
Initial Problem
When I scanned B&W negatives with silverfast (initially V5.5) than I got no differentiation between levels for the highlights.
Investigation
The diagrams here show the relation between negative density and the K value in the preview of silverfast. The different gamma values are set in the option menu of SF. The three different curves are for the different exposure settings in the SF negative dialog (Min, Mid, Max)
Highlights (which refer to T in the region of 2) are badly seperated. The differentiation in K value is small.
Highlights and shadows seem to be handled equally. This seems to be a good compromise.
Now the shadows become badly seperated.
